The First Sweater
Updated: Jul 17, 2021
The start of a whole new journey. Excitement. Trepidation. A sense of “What the hell am I doing?” I had an idea for my first. A pattern that I picked out from a magazine. I had read through the directions, trying to make sense of it in my head. The construction, the sizing, all of it. With false confidence I walked into La Bien Aimee, thinking I needed to pretend like I knew what I was doing. That fascade quickly dissipated. That’s when Aimee suggested the Comfort Fade Cardi. I was intrigued. She made it sound like a great intro project. And it was, really. I picked out my fade, one that looking at now is much more muted and classic compared to my choices these days. I didn’t cast on right away. I waited until I was back home in Texas and then started wind. Next came the gauge swatch, another first. With my measurements matching the pattern, I cast on. I was hooked! The raglan, the fade, the sleeves, and then that scrumptious folded collar. As with my purple scarf, I finished this sweater and could not wait to pick out a new one. A new chapter was started and my bank account wept.
What about you? What’s the story behind your first sweater? What memories does it bring up? What inspiration did it provide for your knitting journey?
